Responsibility 3/7

Character and Responsibility

“Character – the willingness to accept responsibility for one’s own life – is the source from which self respect springs.”
~Joan Didion
In a paragraph, ponder today’s quote. Is the source of character and self respect a willingness to accept responsibility for your own life?  If not, why would anyone want to take responsibility?  Or is there more to it?

  1. I think that the willingness to accept responsibility for your own life is only part of your character. Everything you do defines your characteristics not just one action. Someone should take responsibility just becasue it is the right thing todo.

  3. I believe that this quote is right about what character is. When you accept responsibility you build character. Character is important in ones life because you need to be able to live with the things you do. When you don't take responsibility no one else may know but you will and if you like what you do then you will take responsibility for it if not then you don't have self respect.

  4. Yes, the source of character and self respect is a willingness to accept responsibility for our own lives. We take care of ourselves by breathing, eating, drinking and sleeping, these things keep us alive, which I believe is definitely part of self respect. As far as character goes, it is the values and principles that you instill in your life from when you are an early child to when you are sitting on your death bed.

  5. I think that the willingness to take responsibility of things in one's own life leads to better character and self respect. When you have responsibilities that you must take care of, it gives you a sence of belonging and accomplishment. I think that without those feelings then no one would want to take responsibility for anything. Also, without each person taking responsibility for their lives, then the world would fall apart because a few people can't take care of the rest. I think that responsibility makes the world spin.

  6. I think that one should have own resposnbility for their life unless they are to young to have their own. haveing responsibilities makes you an adult which can make you have more power. with out it many people dont get the respect with out haveing the responsibilities that come with it.

  7. If you take responsibility for things in your life, then you can have self respect. Many people don't have self respect so they don't take the responsibility in things in their lives. Sometimes its hard to take responsibility in things that you have done bad but in the long run it will help you. There is much more to it. Many things you need to learn you can learn with responsibility. Things you do, you can have the self respect and have the feeling of success.

  8. If a person takes responsibility for his own actions then they are using self respect. Every responsibility that a person has to follow with shows what kind of person you truly are and the feeling of accomplishment is a great feeling in the end. The senses of accepting responsibility shows what a good character is.

  9. YOU are the only one who can govern YOURSELF. It is your responsibility to make sure that you are keeping yourself in a good state of mind, making good decisions, and staying committed to our own actions and taking any punishment we receive without own mistakes. Although there are many ways that society tries to limit the things people can do to control things and make good character out of people, but in the end, the only people that can make good character and show good responsibility is ourselves.

  10. I believe that you need to take responsibility for your own life, because if your busy worrying about others lives it means your not taking care of yourself. You need to be willing to accept the responsibility and show that you have self respect, by doing that your accepting the responsibility for your own life. The quote says that to have character you need to accept the responsibilites and once that is accomplished self respect begines. People need to take responsibility if they dont your going to end up with a world where noone cares about themselves or anyone else.

  11. I agree with this quote because responsibility reflects into having self respect. So you have to recieve resposibility to get self respect from every one else. This will give more people to respect you.

  12. I think that one should take there own responsibility for there own life. Character is part of the person and it shows if they have responsibility. Everybody should have responsibility and everybody does have it. Its just if people show that they have responsibility or not. I believe that responsibility comes with self respect and character.

  13. Character comes from how one takes life. Responsibility comes from ones self respect for him/her self. Some people take responsibility because they have matured and grow-up. People also take responsibility because its the way they grew-up and how there parents taught them.

  14. Responsibility isn't choosen it's inavoidable. Sooner or later a person is in charge of his own destiny. A moocher's parents die and homeless people get frostbitten.

  15. I'm going to ponder this quote...Ok, I've completed the pondering process.

I believe that this statement is true. If you can't accept the responsibility for your own actions then you don't have any self-respect. Your true character is also determined by your responsibility for your actions. If you can't live up to the things you are doing then you shouldn't be doing them. If you can just be yourself and show your true colors then you are better off.

  16. I think that responsibility is a big part of everyday life. No matter what you do you need to take responsibility for your actions and do things that benefit yourself. Also, responsibility shows that you have self respect and wouldn't do something to jeopardize that. Your character also develops from the things that you show responsibility in and that you will do what is best for your self, so having a good job, doing good in school, etc..

  17. I believe that having responsiblity is a big part of your life. If you do something wrong, you need to take responsibilty for your actions. You don't have any self-respect if you can't even take responsiblity for your own actions, and admit what you did was either right or wrong. The only people that can make you have good character, is yourself!
