Thane Rosenbaum, the son of two Holocaust survivors, gave up his career as a lawyer to become an author. In his first book, a collection of short stories entitled, "Elijah Visible," Rosenbaum uses his family's experiences as a background for many of the story's characters.
What scene in Night is similar to the experience that Adam has on the elevator? What provoked his delusion? How do perceptions of a situation make it more or less stressful?
When there in the cattle cars on the way to the work camp. The tight area of the elevator and no windows didn't help the situation. More because he's heard the stories and it became real.
ReplyDeleteThe scene that was comparable between Night and Cattle Car Complex was when he was in the elevator compared to when the characters of Night were in the cattle car. Just like Madame Schachter was having visions of fire and terrible things happening, Adam was experiencing similar feelings. He was having visions of what was happening to them while being held at a concentration camp. Both were not in the actual danger of the camps, but because of either past experiences or stories they were told, they had an idea of what was happening or going to happen. These ideas that they had been told or experienced are what triggered these visions that put them through this terrible nightmare.
ReplyDeleteThe short story was comparible to the cattle car scene. With the lady screaming from the fire that wasn't there. The elevator and his parents stories caused his delusions. The perception of a situation makes all the difference in the world. That philosophy goes with the cup is half empty or half full and from there you decide how to react.
ReplyDeleteThe scene in night where all of the people were loaded up in the cattle car and the elevator scene were similar in that they were both helpless and had no way of escape. The horror of his parents' stories and the things he had learned about the holocaust provoked his delusion. If you put yourself in a situation, it will become more stressful. If you are thinking about the holocaust and imagine yourself being there it will become more stressful, especially if you know people that were there in real life.
ReplyDeleteThe scene in night when Wiesel is on the train in the cattle cars is the same situation that Adam is having a vision of. Adams delusion was caused by his parents telling him the stories about the holocaust. He had nightmares before and him being trapped in a small place caused his brain to think he was in a cattle car on the way to a labor camp. The way someone sees the situation makes it either very stressful or very easy to get through. Looking at the glass as half full is usually the best way to look at things.
ReplyDeleteThe scene in Night that is similar to the experience that Adam had on the elevator was when Madame Schachter was yelling fire in the wagon. Adam's delusion was provoked by the things his parents told him. By his parents telling him things that happened, it could have made Adam scared for the fact that his parents could have died. People can make things bigger than what they really are. It can make it more stressful because of the fact that it could be something as big as the Holocaust.
ReplyDeleteIn the book night, they were on a train car where a lady was screaming Fire! Fire!, this scene was simmilar to adams experience in the elevator. Being trapped in the elevator reminded adam of his past when he was trapped in a cattle car. If one invissions the worst they will freak out and become more stressed, if one is calm about a situation they will obviously be less stressed.
ReplyDeleteThe scene in Night that is similar to the experience Adam had would probably be when Madame was freaking out and screaming "fire, fire" and nobody believed her until they actually saw a fire. I think being trapped in a small area and not knowing whether or not he would get out is what provoked his delusion. Perceptions like this can make a situation worse because he was trapped in a small place and he didn't know when he was going to get out or if he was going to get out. So then by the time the security guard got there he had already been in there too long so he ended up loosing it.
ReplyDeleteI believe that when there all got on the train to go to when of the camps when Madame Schacter when she was yelling fire when there was no fire is the same of what happened in the elevator. I think just being in the same situation that his parents were in when they were on the train and going to the camp and not knowing if they were going to survive provoked his delusion. Being in a situation being stuck in an elevator would be very stressful just like being in the train on the way to a camp.
ReplyDeleteBoth Night and Cattle Car Complex look back the the past and the events of the Holocaust. Though Rosenbaum wasn't a first hand victim, he was still haunted by the night terrors of his parents. Surely the descriptions of the cattle cars were similar to that of a elevator car. The feeling of hopelessness and captivity probably lit a fuse in his mind. He men outside who didn't understand his trauma probably accelerated his stress.
ReplyDeleteThe scene where the Jews are on the train heading to the camp is the scene that is similar to the experience Adam had on the elevator. Adam was provoked to his delusion because the elevator was a small, tight area with no air. He was trapped just like his parents where trapped in the train. This situation is more stressful for him because he had to listen to his parents go through the horror of remembering the holocaust. It became real to him that it was happening every day.
ReplyDeleteAdam being in the elevator is similar to the Jews traveling in cattle cars to concentration camps. They do not feel like they deserve this and should not be treated like this. Well he was in the elevator he got the feeling that it was getting smaller and smaller with every breathe. When he could not get out right away he started to panic and try to break his way out. When he figured out that he could not get out he started to recall the stores that he parents told him. How you perceive situations depends on how stressful a situation is going to be for you. If you start to think of the bad things your mind will start to only see the bad things of the situation, but if you think of the good things or make good things about the situation. You will perceive the situation in a good way.
