Justice

Please read the article, "Demjanjuk Guilty of Nazi War Crimes" by clicking on the link below.  When you have finished, I would like you to write a one paragraph response answering one simple question:  Was justice served?   Please cite evidence from the article to support your stance.

 Nazi War Criminal Found Guilty

  1. I believe that justice was not served. In any other case the man would have got 5 years for each murder, not one five year sentence for the killing of 27,900 people. Although the sentence was not fitting to the crimes, I feel the guard being sentence is a representation that the crimes that they commited were so horrible they cannot escape some sort of punishment. If I were the judge I would have sentenced him to life in prison to think about all the pain he caused. I do not feel justice was served, but it is good that they made on last trial about the crime.

  2. I feel that justice was not surved. In my opinion this is un-fair, their are countless others that did not get punished for the same incident. In my mind justice is eye for an eye, not an eye for 5 years in prison.

  3. i dont think that justice was surved. he helped kill jews and he should be punished more. they said he killed 27,900 jews? i think he should have life. yeah hes old but he chose to go that path and should be punished more then anyone else from what he did.

  4. I believe that both side that justice was served and that it wasn't. Justice was getting served because they were putting him in jail for what he did to all of the Jews. But I believe that he is too old to go to jail and he’s health is not that great because he will just end up dying in there anyways. “The court found Demjanjuk is not a flight risk. Before handing down the sentence, judges took into account his age and the eight years he has already served in an Israeli prison on different charges, the court statement said.” I also believe that you can’t be back all the people that they killed and the other SS officers should being going to jail for what they did to. So in the I believe that some justice was served and some in hard to prove and that he is the only one getting charged.

  5. I think there is some justice getting served for those who were killed by him and others. I also believe that it isn't really worth going after him now when he is old and it's years after everything happened. He was not the only one who did the killing and it doesn't say that he has harmed anybody since then, granted it was very wrong for him to do what he did in the first place. He was forced in a way to do what he did which is stated in this: "Demjanjuk's defense argued that he was a prisoner of war who was forced to do what the Nazis wanted. But the court rejected that claim, concluding that Demjanjuk could have fled "despite a certain degree of risk for himself." So no matter what he would have been in trouble and he either would have ended up killed or put where he is now. So I do think justice was served for those who were killed, but I also don't think it's worth it to put him in prison now.

  6. I think that there was some justice served. This was because he was getting out away for what he did to all the Jews. I believe that they don't need to go after him anymore because hes old. If they could, they could find others that are still alive who have killed thousands of Jews. "It serves notice on all human rights violators that the passage of time will neither erase the world's memory of their terrible crimes nor end its commitment to holding them to account," This means that they want him put away some people can try to forget the horrible things that happened. If they would have caught him earlier, I feel that he would have been killed. I do think justice was served.

  7. I think justice was served to a point. It wasn't served because he got to still live almost his whole life before getting caught and he's old and about to die anyway. He won't even suffer for very long. I think justice was served because they finally caught him. This is justice for some of the victims. Justice was served but I don't believe it was served enough.

  8. I'm not sure if I agree with this article. Yes I understand that the man knew what he was doing back in the day of the camp, but who are we to say 60 years later, that he needs to go to jail for something he was told to do. He did it because he wanted to live. Not everyone can make that sacrifice to save others. All he wanted to do is do what he was told, so he may fulfill his own life. I understand where we are coming from by arresting this man, but really what is that doing. The man wasn't going around killing millions of Jews to this date, so why arrest him now at age 91? I must say justice might have been served, but the reasoning just isn't right.

  9. No, I don't think that justice was served. This is just one man that has been convicted of his crimes, there have not been many instances of things like this happenning. Most of the people that were participating in these crimes got away with it. 6 million jews were killed, this is less than a sliver of justice.

  10. I think its a little late to convict him of the crimes he did 50 years ago. He should have been convicted after the holocaust. It might make the Jewish community happy and feel that they got justice, but I don't think it effects anyone else. Sure he killed jewish people when he was a guard but he was more "brainwashed" into thinking that they were bad people and needed to die.

  11. i do not think that justice was surved here. He is only getting 5 years in jail for murdering/killing 27,900 people. I think that he should be sentinced to death or toucherd so he understands and feel what they 27,900 people felt like. people who get cought for drugs get a longer sentience then murders... i do not think that is right and should be put to the death sentence.

  12. The amount of people that he killed does not compare to the years he is sentenced to. He is 80 years old already and, let's face it, he probably doesn't have many years left in him. Prison isn't the healthiest thing for a person. It's a shame that he wasn't found earlier, but at least they found him. Many other officers were not found. Justice was served, but far too late.
